What is Gabion box

Datetime:2016-11-15 Hits:

Gabion box consist of rectangular units, fabricated from double twisted hexagonal mesh. When filled with stomes, gabions become large, flexible, permeable. So gabion box widely used for hydraulic and geo-technical control such as retaining walls, sea walls, channel linings, revetments and weirs for earth retention.

In recent years, soil erosion has always been a serious promblem. Gabion box have proved to be a lasting solution around the world. The earliest known use of gabion-type structures was along the Nile River during the era of the Pharaoh for bank protection. In the subsequent 7,000 years since its first use by the Egyptians, the gabion system has evolved from baskets of woven reeds to engineered containers manufactured from wire mesh. The lasting appeal of gabions lies in their inherent flexibility.

Efficiency in gabion structures, rather than decreasing with age, actually increases. During early periods of use, silt and vegetation will collect with the rock fill to form a naturally permanent structure and may be used to remove solid pollutants or "floatables" from the water.

Gabion box is a ecological box structure that is welded or weaved with low carbon steel wire. The diameter of the steel wire could be different according to ASTM standard or EN standard, but it is normally varied between 2.0--4.0mm. The tensile strength of the steel wire should not be less than 38kg/m2 and the weight of the metal coating should be more than 245g/m2. Besides, the diameter of the wires should be larger than that of those in the inner parts. In the case of the weaved gabion box, the length of the weaved or twisted part should not be less than 50mm so that the metal coating or plastic coating in that part would not be damaged in the process of weaving.

Just as what has mentioned in the previous part, there are mainly two kinds of gabion boxes depending on the manufacturing methods, namely welded gabion box and weaved gabion box and they has their own unique characteristics apart from the common features of gabion.

Welded gabion box

It is featured with “assembly”, that is, welding the mesh panel first, assemble the five panels that form the box(except the top one) with helical wire then pack the semi-finished gabion with the top panel. Welded gabion box has an extremely wide application in both home and abroad. Thanks to its tidy and aesthetic appearance, it is often used as the scenery of park or residence. Besides, it has the characteristics of easy installation, low cost, etc.

Weaved gabion box

Just as the name indicates, it is double-twisted in hexagonal mesh panel with low carbon steel wire or aluminum-zinc alloy wire that has good capability to resist corrosion and abrasion and filled with stone. The hexagonal shape of Gabion box the mesh is a perfect example of mechanics, thus gives with good strength to resist huge stress. It mixes the requirement to engineering structure and environment very well and has become the ideal choice to protect river bed, conserve water and soil, prevent and control debris flow, etc.

Gabions and mattresses could be purchased as assembled baskets, unassembled panels, or in rollstock form. rollstock may utilized to build continuous gabion structures up to 300 feet in length or mattresses up to 150' in length.

Gabion structures can be built in all circumstances and are particularly suitable especially for landslide control in mountainous countries and in areas with persistently bad ground conditions. Having the good quality of deformability makes them preferable to a concrete wall which would crack and collapse. In addition to the distinct structural advantages over concrete and other non-porous gravity wall structures, the potential to vegetate a standard gabion basket or wire faced wall offers unique landscaping potential as well. You can buy them from Wuzhou Kingda.
