Sintering metals is a fabrication process with history. Sintered metals are heated and formed to create durable metal and alloy functioning parts. They can be used in combination with other materials or as the founding element to create parts that are used for vehicles and in several industries, including manufacturing/production, pharmaceutical and medical.

Metal sintering is the process of fabricating metal shapes from powdered metals. An old technology that is more than 1,000 years old, sintering now includes blending of different metals and alloys like bronze and iron with ceramics for multiple uses. Sintering is a three-step process of producing powdered metal, shaping the desired item with the powder material and strengthening the piece with heat.

Air Purification
Sintered metals have been used to create metal filters for purifying oils and liquid fuels or filtering chemically active liquid products. Sintered metal filters may also be used to remove solid contaminants from the air. Used in industrial and pharmaceutical environments, sintered filters feature large filtration capacity, durability and plasticity. They can also absorb shocks and prevent contamination of substances being filtered through them. They made be created using metal and alloy powders like copper, nickel, iron and bronze.

Sintered Brake Pads
Sintered brake pads are used in motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. Known for their durability and heat tolerance, sintered brake pads are thought to provide superior results in heavy braking situations. Sintered brakes are made of copper, through two processes, pressure sintering or belt furnace sintering. The backing plates for brake pads are steel based and copper coated.

Sleeve Bearings
Sleeve bearings are an alternative to the ball bearings used in equipment fans used for large industrial or chemical purposes. Bearings support the service life and quiet running of fans by assisting the safe movement of rotating parts like rotors. Sleeve bearings are manufactured from sintered metal, giving the advantage over standard ball bearings because sleeve bearings are porous with pores spaced to provide good lubrication while the bearing is in use.

Metal Crowns
Dental crowns are tooth-shaped covers placed over the tooth to restore tooth shape and strength. Crowns are cemented in place at the gum line by a dentist, ensuring the safety of all exposed areas or the tooth enamel. Sintered metals can be used for the development of metal and ceramic crowns. There are limitations in casting sintered metal crowns, however, which can sometimes make fitting more difficult than with crowns developed from other materials.
