Industrial filters come in a wide variety of models and types, each of which has their own specific intended use. Some filters are used to purify air, some water, and other for oils or other inorganic materials. Whether you are a business owner or a private citizen, you may find yourself in need of an industrial-grade filter for something, so it's a good idea to know what the different types of filters are.
Air Filters
Air filters, also called air intake elements or fan filters are one of the most frequently used forms of filters. Their function is to remove dust and other particulates from air. This is usually accomplished by running the air through a screen of some sort, usually made from polyethylene or polypropylene mesh.
High Efficiency Particulate Air Filters
High-efficiency particulate air filters are basically a more advanced and thorough form of air filters. These filters were originally developed by the Atomic Energy Commission to protect researchers from radioactive particles. These filters can protect the air not only from particulates but from odors and gases as well.
Bag Filters
Bag filters are best when used to remove large solids from liquids such as coolant, ink and paint strainers. The liquid flows through the bag, with the solids becoming caught inside. Filter bags come in a wide variety of designs made from a wide variety of materials, usually needled felts and nonwoven materials.
Hydraulic Filters
Hydraulic filters are used to purify oils and other petroleum-based liquid products. Often, these filters are part of another hydraulic system, as breakdowns of hydraulic systems are frequently caused by the presence of impurities in the system's oil. However, hydraulic filters can be used to purify other materials besides oil, such as water or any other fluids that contain water. These filters are cylinder-shaped and have small holes running along the side.
Panel Filters
Panel filters are another common type of industrial filters. Like the previous types, they come in many different sizes and forms, but are almost always plane-shaped. These types of filters are most commonly used in air conditioning and ventilation systems.
Absorption Elements
Absorption elements are a type of filter that works like a sponge. They are dropped into the liquid requiring purification and the impurities are absorbed into the material itself. Some filters like this are used to remove solable materials from resins and oils, while carbon filters are used to purify potable liquids.
