Treat a Barbecue Grill for Rust
Datetime:2014-07-02 Hits:
When kept outside, barbecue grills are exposed to weather conditions that promote the development of rust. When exposed to damp conditions, chips in the paint of a barbecue will begin to decay due to the development of rust. It is best to treat rust as soon as it develops to prevent the spread of the rust, which can make the barbecue unusable. You can also take precautions to prevent the development of new rust.
Instructions
1
Remove the shelves from the inside of the grill.
2
Scrape off any flaking rust with a paint scraper. This will remove the largest chunks that get in the way of repair.
3
Scour the rusted area with a wire brush to remove all the rust from the grill.
4
Cover the surface with a rust converter using the instructions on the packaging. Usually, you apply it with a paintbrush. Allow the rust converter to dry.
5
Dip a paintbrush in grill touch up paint, available from hardware stores or barbecue suppliers. Grill touch up paint is heat resistant. Regular paint will not work.
6
Scrape the grill shelves with a wire brush to remove all the rust.
7
Spray the shelves with cooking spray to prevent the development of new rust.
