Traditionally, only metal trays, baskets and containers were used to reprocess orthopedic and surgical instruments through an autoclave’s steam sterilization cycle. That changed in the 1970s with the introduction of plastic/resin sterilization cassettes and case/tray systems. The great advantage of metal sterilization packaging systems is that, being thermal conductors, they are also "heat sinks." This means that, unlike plastic systems, metal systems in the accepted weight range retain enough heat to vaporize the water/moisture produced during the standard autoclave steam cycle. At the end of the standard cycle, the door of the autoclave is usually opened slightly for approximately 10 minutes to help cool the load and then a new autoclave cycle can be started immediately. This does not happen when a hospital has to process mixed loads of plastic and metal systems in the autoclave due to the presence of "wet packs" at the end of a standard cycle.
