The Safest and Best Ways to Clean a Barbeque Grill
You might think that the high heat used when cooking on a barbecue grill means that you do not need to clean it, but that is not true. Grills should be thoroughly cleaned just like any other cooking tool. A dirty grill could mean that you are eating the charred remnants of your last meal each time you cook with it. Use caution when you clean your barbecue grill so that you do not burn yourself.
Timing
Never clean your grill when it is hot. If you are about to cook, clean your grill before you turn it on or build your fire. If you have just cooked, let your grill cool down completely before cleaning it. Cleaning the grill while it is still hot could result in you burning yourself. Additionally, spraying cleaning products onto a hot grill could result in flames or even fumes that you should not breathe.
Remove Food Bits
When you grill food, bits of the food are often left behind. If you can see remnants of the meats or vegetables that you cooked the last time you grilled, remove them before anything else. Use a heavy wire brush with a long handle. Vigorously scrub the grates until the food bits fall away. Turn the grate over and scrub the other side of it as well.
Clean Grates and Grill Exterior
After the food bits are removed from the grill grates, clean and sanitize the grill. Fill a large bowl with warm water and enough dish detergent to create suds. Wipe down both sides of the grill grates with a sponge or a dish cloth that you have dipped into the water. When the grill grates are clean, wipe down the exterior of the grill as well to remove any grease or grime that is on it.
Prepare Grate
Once the grill is cleaned, prepare the grates for the next time you grill. Dry the grates with a clean cloth if they are still damp from when you washed them. Spray them with a light coating of vegetable oil. Close the grill and leave it alone until the next time you are ready to grill. The vegetable oil will not only keep the cast iron grill grates seasoned, it will make the grill easier to clean after you use it next.
