Store Food in Metal Containers
Datetime:2014-09-15 Hits:
An urban myth warns against storing food in metal containers, but this only applies to acidic food in aluminum containers. Stainless steel is a safe and convenient way to store food. It's lightweight, can go directly from the refrigerator to the stove top and is almost impossible to break. It's also preferable to some plastics which have materials (like the BPA in some water bottles) that leech into food and can be toxic.
Instructions
1
Wash the stainless steel food containers thoroughly with soap and water when you first buy them. Wash again between each use. They are dishwasher safe as well.
2
Store fruits and veggies longer by drying them with a paper towel before putting them in the metal containers. Avoid storing bananas in metal containers -- unless you're preparing to make banana bread -- as they will ripen more quickly.
3
Store leftovers in stainless steel containers. Take them for lunch the next day, or put them directly on the stove or in a toaster oven to heat them up. Do not microwave metal.
4
Freeze food in stainless steel. This is especially effective for soups or other foods you will heat up afterward, as you can put it directly on the stove and, unlike glass, there's no chance of the metal cracking.
