Smaller, collapsible steamer baskets fit in two- and three-quart cooking pans, and you can use larger stainless steel steamers for larger vegetables or meats. To use stainless steel steamer baskets, put a small amount of water in the bottom of the pan, but not enough to touch the bottom of the steamer. Bring the water to a boil and put the vegetables in the basket. The vegetables can take from four to 20 minutes to cook, depending on the size of the vegetable and the desired level of doneness.
