Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerators use a water filter to filter out contaminants in the water before the water reaches the dispenser or ice maker. Whirlpool recommends changing the filter disc every six months.
Replacing a Whirlpool refrigerator filter disc requires purging the system before using the water. The purge allows water to run through the new filter disc and must be done before the water is usable for consumption. Whirlpool replacement filters are available at a number of appliance dealers
Open the freezer door and turn off the ice maker. Some Whirlpool models use a wire on/off lever on the upper side of the ice maker. Flip the lever up to turn off the ice maker. Other models have an on/off switch on the side of the freezer compartment. Push the switch to "off" and close the freezer door.

Slide the disc off the protruding notch on the bottom of the water filter disc. Unpack the new water filter disc from its box and pull off the plastic cover on the tip of the filter disc. Slide the disc on the protruding notch on the bottom end of the new filter disc.
Hold the disc and filter in front of the hole in the refrigerator grille. Rotate the disc so the handle is pointing vertically. Insert the filter disc into the hole in the grill until the disc is flush against the grill. Turn the disc clockwise to lock the filter disc in position. The handle is horizontal when the filter disc is locked.
Fill a large glass or container with water from the water dispenser on the refrigerator door. Empty the container and fill it again. Continue filling and emptying the container until the water stream no longer has bubbles and the water is clear. Open the freezer door and turn on the ice maker.
