Put Up Wire Shelves
Datetime:2014-05-06 Hits:
Wire shelving helps you organize a closet or room with less effort and expense than that required for other types of shelving. While there are different types of wire shelving, most utilize a system in which vertical supports hold up the shelving brackets where you attach the actual wire shelves. Most wire shelving systems consist of only a few light pieces. Following an orderly procedure makes installation a simple task.
Instructions
1
Use a level to draw a straight line on the wall where you will install the wire shelf. Make sure the line is a few inches longer than the intended width of the shelf.
2
Place the stud finder on the wall and locate two studs, each close to opposite ends of the line. Mark the stud locations with short vertical lines intersecting the horizontal line.
3
Place the large shelving rail on the wall, making the holes in the rail line up with the horizontal line. Adjust the rail left or right to make the holes on the far left and right of the rail line up with the marked stud locations. Make a mark on the wall in the middle of each hole in the rail.
4
Remove the rail and drill pilot holes using a 3/8-inch drill bit, unless the wire shelf instructions specify a different size hole.
5
Squeeze the arms of a wall anchor and tap it into a hole with a hammer. If your shelving system comes with an anchor key, which looks like a large golf tee, push the anchor key into the anchor to engage it and lock it in place.
6
Place the rail back on the wall and screw it into place using the screws that came with the wire shelving kit.
7
Hang the uprights on the horizontal rail. On some models you may need to attach a gripping hook onto the top of the upright. Position the uprights evenly across the rail, then make pencil marks through the holes on the upright. Drill pilot holes on the marks, install anchors and then screw the uprights into place.
8
Slide the brackets into the slots on the uprights. Use your level to make sure the brackets on different uprights are installed at the same height.
9
Place the back of a wire shelf into the slot on the rear of the bracket, then push the plastic tab on the bracket back to lock the shelf into place. Repeat for every shelf you are installing.
