Make a Carbon Filter Tube

Datetime:2015-02-23 Hits:

Carbon is material that is most commonly used to filter water. In fact, it is one of the oldest methods of water filtering. This source works as a magnet for small dirt, debris and sediment when an object comes into contact with the surface of the filter. So, when water touches or passes through a carbon filter tube, most of the water's contaminates stick to the surface of the filter. The water is cleaned through this process. Creating your own filter is a fairly simple process and can be done in an hour or so.

Instructions

1
Cut the top and bottom off of a milk jug. Use a coping saw to do this.

2
Cut the handle off of the colander if one exists.

3
Insert the colander into the bottom of the milk jug. The end of the colander should sit even with the cut bottom edge of the milk jug. Use caulk to seal the colander in place. Allow the caulk to dry for the recommended amount of time stated on the packaging. Dry caulk should not feel tacky to the touch. Trim the colander to fit as if needed.

4
Fill the milk jug to the top with charcoal.

5
Place the small colander on the cut top of the milk jug. The colander should fit over the top of the milk just so that the interior sides of the colander sit on top of the exterior sides of the milk jug. Use caulk to secure the colander in place. Trim the colander to fit as necessary. Allow the caulk to dry.
