Ideas for Dog Kennels
Datetime:2014-02-04 Hits:
Dog Kennels, also called dog runs, are fenced-off, outdoor areas that keep pets protected from dangers such as running away and becoming lost, cars, other animals and unsafe areas such as open pools. When constructing a Dog Kennel, consider factors such as materials, size and proper protection from the elements.
Material
There are many suitable materials for building a Dog Kennel. What you choose depends on what is available and within your budget. Chain-link and privacy fencing both work well and can be used to create an enclosed area in your yard. You can also purchase pre-made panels, which come in different strengths and are simply bolted together.
Flooring
While a Dog Kennel can be erected on grass, which simply needs regular cutting, you can choose flooring that is comfortable for your dog and easy to clean. Cement is easy to clean and prevents unwanted digging; however, it can get very cold in winter and is unsuitable for icy and snowy weather. Wood and plastic decking can be used as long as the materials are deemed safe for dogs. Wood must be made water- and odor-proof before use.
Safety
A Dog Kennel or run must provide your dog with adequate shelter and protection from the elements. Cover the Dog Kennel with a tarp or similar material to filter out the sun if there is no natural shade. A doghouse provides enclosed shelter, and gives your dog somewhere quiet to nap or lie down if he is in the Dog Kennel for extended periods of time. Make sure your dog has a constant supply of fresh water in the kennel.
Additional Considerations
Build your dog kennel according to the size of your dog and the number of dogs you own. The larger the dog and the more pets that will use the run, the larger it must be. The kennel must be a considerable size, at least 20 feet for small dogs, if it is going to be used for exercise for your dog. You also must consider the location of the Dog Kennel. If it is attached to the home, you can install a dog door so your dog can go outside at will. Install a door to give humans’ access to the Dog Kennel so you can enter and exit in order to clean and set up.
