How to install a bicycle basket

Bikes don't have to be boring. Transform your bike into a work of art, a grocery hauler, or a seat for Toto. Cruisers, beach bikes and comfort bikes all have room for a basket, and there are two types: One connects via the steering tube, the other with clamshell brackets. The typical bike basket should support at least 25 pounds. Bikes with fully-loaded baskets handle differently. Ride the bike before heading into traffic, and don't leave home without a helmet.

Loosen the stem bolt using a 5-mm hex wrench and remove it. The stem bolt is the large bolt facing upward on the top of the vertical steering tube. If the bolt will not come out but the stem is loose, it's a different type of handlebar, it works the same way. Grab the handlebars with both hands and lift the handlebar and stem off together. The cables will still be attached to the handlebars, allow the handlebars to hang gently from the front of the bike.

Replace the nut, and tighten it to secure the 90-degree bracket to the steering shaft. Place the stem and handlebar assembly back on the steering tube. Place the bolt back into the stem if you removed it. Align the handlebars perpendicular to the tire if needed. Tighten the bolt to secure the handlebars and stem.

Swing the two metal struts upward to contact two tabs. Tighten the clam-shell screws securely with the screwdriver. Finish by tightening the axle nuts with the adjustable wrench. The majority of bike baskets are installed on cruisers or comfort bikes. This type of bike typically has axle nuts instead of quick-release on the wheels. Lots of bikes, including those with quick-release, have holes on the fork for additions such as baskets, and there's no need to remove the axle nut. If there are no additional holes, it's possible to remove the shaft from the quick-release, put on the bracket, and reinsert the shaft to secure the long, vertical bracket to the wheel. The instructions provided are for the most common baskets. Simple variations may occur depending on manufacturer.
