How to Organize Your CD Collection
The average CD collection constantly grows, so it's bound to outgrow whatever space you've allotted to it. And if you have thousands of CDs, it can be tricky to organize them so you can find what you're looking for. Find out how to file your music in an orderly fashion.
Instructions
1 Get a rack or purchase multiple CD racks. If your collection tends to continually grow, be sure your rack has plenty of space to spare for future purchases.
2 Divide your collection by genre. If you have a wall rack, arrange the genres by rows or by sections. For multiple CD racks, devote each one to a musical style.
3 Don't bother alphabetizing. Unless you've completely abandoned CDs for another format, carefully alphabetizing your collection will only result in frustration down the road.
4 Consider investing in CD "notebooks." Not every CD you own needs to be on display. Put less-used discs into a CD book and you'll save lots of space. (Note: if you think you might eventually sell or trade in these discs, keep the cases and inserts.)
5 Digitize your collection. It's a big project, but you could store all your music on your computer and then sell your CDs. Be aware, however, that while it's impossible to erase a music CD, it's very possible for a hard-drive disaster to wipe out your entire collection-which is why it's essential to perform regular backups if you take this route.
