How to Make a Storage Basket
By making your own, you can create storage baskets large enough to store a stack of magazines or baskets just big enough to hold loose paper clips from your desk. You can spend hundreds of dollars buying storage containers and storage baskets for the various items in your home, or you can make your own storage baskets. Personalize the dimensions of your storage baskets to fit onto a shelf or under a bed.
Instructions
1
Decide on the length, width and depth you require for your storage basket. For this instructional, we will be making a 1-foot-wide by 1-foot-deep by 1-foot-long storage basket. A basket of these dimensions may be free standing or placed on a shelf.
2
Cut five pieces of cardboard in squares measuring exactly 1 foot by 1 foot. The cardboard pieces will be used to make the bottom and sides of the storage basket. Adjust the sizes of the pieces in order to make a storage basket of a different size.
3
Measure and cut the material for the storage basket sides. For this basket size, you will need four pieces measuring 13 inches wide by 25 inches long and two pieces measuring 13 inches wide by 13 inches long. To make storage baskets of different sizes, remember that you will need two pieces of material measuring 1 inch wider and 1 inch longer than the bottom cardboard piece. For the sides, you need pieces of material 1 inch wider than the cardboard, and twice as long as the cardboard piece, plus an additional inch of length.
4
Place one of the cardboard pieces in between the two pieces of cloth that measure 13 inches wide. Stitch a seam all the way around the very edge of the cardboard piece, leaving 1/2 inch of material along all edges of the cardboard.
5
Place a cardboard piece inside the longer material piece. Fold the material over so that the edges of the material all line up and the cloth hangs over the edge of the cardboard on all but one side. Stitch the material together along the very edges of the cardboard again. Repeat this for the remaining three pieces.
6
Stitch the sidepieces to the bottom of the storage basket to create a plus-sign shape. Be sure to leave the seamless edges of the sidepieces pointing away from the bottom piece; this will create a seamless top edge of the finished storage basket.
7
Fold the sides of the storage basket inward so that the seams from the previous step are on the inside of the basket. Pinch up the excess material at the corners you created by folding up the sides of the basket. Stitch the material at the corners together from the inside of the storage basket, so that all seams are on the inner part of the basket.
