How to Keep your Hamster Cage From Smelling

Hamsters make small, fun pets that are fairly easy to care for, but often the hamster cage can accumulate an unpleasant odor. When the cage is properly cared for and cleaned regularly, you can easily keep your hamster cage looking its best and free of odor. Remember to use only safe cleaning products that will remove residue and odor without harming your hamster.

Instructions

1 Remove your hamster from the cage and place in a hamster ball or a similar ventilated unit.

2 Discard the used bedding into the trash. This typically works best outdoors, as often there is a fair portion of dust that spreads when you dump the cage. Also discard food and water from feeding dishes.

3 Wash down the cage with a bucket filled with about 1 gallon of water. Add in about 1/2 cup baking soda for an added deodorizing element. Use a cleaning rag and use an old toothbrush to clean crevices. If you have access and it's a nice day outside, wash down the cage with your garden hose.

4 Let the cage air-dry, and refill with an odor-absorbent bedding. Read package labeling for the type of bedding that best suits your needs.

5 Clean the cage and change the bedding at least once per week to prevent odor.
