How to Get Rust Off Oven Racks
If your oven racks are rusty, you don't have to discard them. You can remove the rust safely yourself rather than wasting money on new ones. When oven racks are continuously exposed to liquid and high heat, they may rust and corrode. Although it's best to clean up any spills as they happen to prevent this problem, it's possible to remove built-up rust using natural household ingredients.
1 Allow the racks to completely cool before taking them out of the oven. Cover a work surface with an old towel and place the rusty racks on top of it.
2 Place a few drops of dish soap into a bowl of warm water and stir to mix. Dip a nonabrasive scouring pad into the soapy water. Rub the pad over the racks in a circular motion to remove as much of the rust as possible. Dip the pad into the water to saturate as necessary. Remove any stubborn rust with a brass-bristled brush.
3 Create a vinegar solution to remove the rest of the rust from the racks. Place 4 cups of distilled white vinegar and 2 cups of table salt into a large trash bag. Tie the top of the bag to close it. Swirl the bag around to mix the vinegar and salt.
4 Open the trash bag and place the oven racks inside. Close the bag again. Manipulate the bag with your hands to work the vinegar solution over the racks.
5 Allow the racks to soak in the vinegar and salt mixture for 24 hours. Take the bag outside and place it in the sunlight, if possible, as heat will accelerate the rust-removal process.
6 Take the racks out of the bag and rub them with a rag or sponge, using the salt as a gentle abrasive. Rinse the rust-free racks in warm water and dry them thoroughly before putting them back into the oven.
