How to Fix Dish Racks That Stain Your Dishes
If you have recently painted or stained a wooden or metal dish rack, remnants of the dye might be leaving marks on your dishes. This is not only unsightly, but it's unsafe, as you don't want to possibly ingest the chemicals from some marks. Luckily, rather than having to buy a brand new dish rack, you can fix the one you have.
Instructions
1 Dampen a sponge with warm water and add a drop of mild detergent to the center of it. Rub the sides of the sponge together to distribute the detergent. Wipe down the dish rack and rinse it well.
2 Pat down the dish rack with paper towels laid it on some newspapers on a flat work surface outside or in a well-ventilated area. Put on safety goggles and a dust mask.
3 Spray the dish rack with a light coat of polyurethane from a spray can. Hold the can 8 to 10 inches from the surface of the dish rack. Turn the can this way and that, to allow the polyurethane to penetrate into the crevices. Allow it to air-dry overnight.
4 Flip the dish rack over the next day and spray it with a clear coat of polyurethane finish. Allow it to air-dry overnight. Add at least one more coat, ideally two, spraying the polyurethane in exactly the same manner as you did before. Allow 12 hours of drying time between each coat and a final 24 hours of drying time after the final coat, before you put a dish on the dish rack.
