How to Disinfect a Cat Cage

Cats are a very clean animal by nature, but injury or illness can affect their cleaning habits. Separating a sick cat helps keep an illness from spreading, and a cage is one of the most effective forms of isolation. Disinfecting the cage should be a priority because it will keep the animal clean, as well as minimize the chance of disease transmission.

Instructions

1 Wear a pair of rubber gloves, and remove all dishes and bedding from the cage. Wipe up any fluids from the bottom of the cage with a towel.

2 Wash the bedding and towels in hot water, adding ¼ cup of bleach to the water to sanitize the bedding. Dry the bedding and towels on the highest heat setting on the dryer.

3 Add the dishes to a clean bucket, and fill the bucket with hot water and ¼ cup bleach. Soak the toys for 15 minutes, then rinse with water and air-dry.

4 Spray the disinfectant over the cage, and let sit for five minutes. Scrub all exposed surfaces with a towel, adding more disinfectant if necessary. Stuck-on messes can be scrubbed away with a stiff-bristled scrub brush.

5 Wet a clean towel with hot water and wipe away the disinfectant. Repeat with a clean towel until all traces of disinfectant have been removed, and allow the cage to air-dry.
