How to Decorate With Steel Shelving
Decorate any room in your home or office with steel shelving, which is typically lighter and less expensive than it's wood counterparts. The way you use and incorporate the steel shelving into your decor or theme will largely depend on the style you're decorating in. Shelving provides extra storage or display space as well as fills in blank, open spaces with something attractive to look at. Let the steel show through for a contemporary or minimalist look or camouflage the steel for another look.
1. Place the shelving in the space you want to display items or where there is too much empty space. Determine what style you'd like to decorate the room in or incorporate the shelving into your current decor. For example, if the shelving unit will go in your living room that's decorated in country style, you'll want to cover as much of the steel as possible. If it's being added to a contemporary room decorated in white and silver, it will fit in perfect the way it is.
2. Spray paint or cover the steel if it doesn't fit in with your decor. Browns may complement other wood pieces in the room even though the steel probably won't pass for brown. It will blend in better than the silvery steel color.
3. Add glass shelves to dress up the steel shelving unit or provide a smooth and solid shelf to display your items. Other options include placing thick particle board, paper or thin wood on the shelves. Cut them to fit and paint them the same color as the steel shelving unit or in another color that matches the color scheme in the room.
4. Use flat mirrors, trays or plates placed under smaller items that would fall between the slats or bars in the steel shelves.
5. Arrange your accessory items on the steel shelving. Incorporate the colors or items found in other places throughout the room. Fill them with framed pictures, candles, vases, plants, floral arrangements, knickknacks, baskets or anything else you wish to display. For example, in a bathroom decorated with white and various hues of blue, consider a blue vase with white flowers, blue and white candles and a white basket filled with rolled blue towels.
