How to Clean a Spa Cartridge Filter
Spa cartridge filters are made of a pleated material that catches any dirt or debris in the water. The filters clog over time due to buildup and algae growth. They should be cleaned every two weeks with plain water and once a month using specialized cleaners. Regular cleaning ensures maximum filtration and water flow, allowing your hot tub to run more efficiently.
Instructions
1 Turn off the spa's power and locate the filter cartridge. It is usually visible from inside the spa, either in a basket or under a lid. Unscrew or lift off the lid to remove the filter.
2 Attach the straight sprayer nozzle to the garden hose. Spray the filter at a 45-degree angle to remove any debris stuck in the pleats.
3 Mix the filter cleaner with water in a bucket, following the instructions on the cleaner. Soak the filter for at least one hour or overnight. Rinse thoroughly with water. This should be done once a month and after every water change.
4 Soak the filter in an acid solution if algae is present. Wear safety goggles and gloves for protection. Mix 1 gallon of water and 1/2 cup muriatic acid in a well-ventilated area. Soak the filter until all bubbling stops.
5 Rinse the filter well with clean water while wearing protective gear. Use the spray nozzle to get all traces of the acid off of the filter. Be careful to avoid any splashing.
6 Air dry and replace the filter. Turn the spa's power back on.
Tips & Warnings
Change spa cartridge filter annually.
Keep a spare filter to replace the one you removed for cleaning.
