How to Clean Engine Air Filters
The air filter is an essential component of this air intake system. In order to operate at the highest possible level, your vehicle relies on an intake system that provides an abundant flow of clean air to the engine. Through time and use, however, the filter inevitably becomes clogged or dirty. This eventually leads to a situation where the engine is deprived of the oxygen necessary for proper and efficient internal combustion. Fortunately, it is possible to periodically clean the engine's air filter, thus ensuring a continuous supply of clean air.

Locate the air filter container or box within the vehicle's engine compartment. The box containing the air filter is usually made of plastic and has a large, air intake hose attached to it. If you have difficulty locating the air filter container, check the engine compartment diagram in the owner's manual for your vehicle.

Remove the air filter from the container. This will usually require removing a few screws or disconnecting a series of small clamps or snaps. The exact setup will vary from one vehicle's make and model to the next.

Wipe down the inside of the air filter box/container with a dry, clean rag. Remove as much dirt or dust as possible. You may also vacuum the interior of the box with a wet-dry vacuum.

Tap the air filter gently against the ground in order to dislodge as much dirt and debris as possible.

Vacuum the air filter with the wet-dry vac. Vacuum all surfaces of the filter, ensuring to get between the vanes in the filter.

Submerge the air filter into a bucket full of warm, soapy water and swirl it around. By washing the filter, you will remove any dirt left behind by the vacuum. After you've swirled it in soapy water several times, shake the filter to remove as much water as possible.

Allow the filter to air dry completely and put it back into the air filter box/container. Make certain the filter is dry prior to replacing it. Never put a wet air filter back into the vehicle, as it could potentially damage the engine.
