How to Build a Metal BBQ Grill

Building your own metal barbecue grill does not necessarily involve welding or bolting or drilling anything at all. In fact you can create your own grill from common household items that you may already have. These kinds of grills are highly portable, can be set up almost anywhere and won't set you back a couple hundred dollars as some store-bought barbecue grills will.

Instructions

1 Place a large stainless steel wok on top of a metal stand or a metal cart. Other large metal dishes, tubs or bowls will also work.

2 Stack barbecue coals in the wok in a pyramid to about three-quarters of the way toward the top. Put two or three coal fire starters in the pyramid and light the coals, using matches or a lighter. Leave the coals to burn for around half an hour until there is a white ash covering them.

3 Place a large stainless steel oven rack or a cooling rack over the top of the wok. Grill your food on the rack over the coals.

Tips & Warnings
If you don't have a metal cart or stand, or you want an ultra-portable grill, place the wok on a base of about 5 or 6 firebricks placed flat on the ground.

Don't use galvanized metal for making a barbecue grill as the coating can exude toxic fumes when heated. Stainless steel or cast iron work best.
