How To Clean Stainless Barbecue Grills

That shimmering stainless steel grill on the patio needs to be cleaned regularly to preserve its dazzling appearance and to maintain the metal's anti-corrosion properties. Stainless steel reacts with the air to inhibit rust, but dirt and grease can reduce the life of the grill by creating a barrier between the metal and oxygen. Regular cleaning keeps the grill exterior shiny and scrubbing the grates helps food taste better, because no one wants to sample last week's cookout on tonight's dinner.

Instructions

1 Spray the grill exterior with stainless-steel cleaner available at hardware and grocery stores, or rub on liquid dish-washing detergent.

2 Allow the cleaning solution to set on the grill for at least 5 minutes, then wipe off with paper towels.

3 Wipe down the grill once more wet paper towels dampened in warm water to remove any residual grease, dirt or cleaner.

4 Dry the exterior surface of the grill with clean towels to prevent water spotting.

5 Ignite the grill and turn the burner control knobs to high.

6 Close the grill and let it heat up for 10 minutes.

7 Turn off the grill, open the cover and scrub the cooking grates with the steel or brass-bristle brush to remove old food particles and grease. Allow the grill to cool before proceeding to step 8.

8 Pour a tablespoon of cooking oil into a paper towel and rub the top cooking grates until they glisten with oil.

9 Place a vinyl grill cover over the stainless steel grill when not in use to prevent water spots from forming on the finish due to rainfall and morning dew.
