A fire that originated from a barbecue grill resulted in an estimated $90,000 in damage to a north Columbia home but no injuries.
At 9:51 p.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to a report of a house fire at 412 Amazon Drive, according to a Columbia Fire Department news release. They arrived to find the roof and back of the single-story home on fire. The blaze was brought under control in about half an hour, with the most significant damage to the attic, ceilings and screened porch.
The homeowner, David Wilson, is temporarily staying with friends because the home is uninhabitable, Capt. John Metz said. Smoke detectors were sounding when fire crews arrived, and the home is insured, he said.
Columbia Assistant Fire Marshal Lt. Tim Bach determined the fire originated from a grill, Metz said, though investigators were unsure what specific factors might have contributed, such as a grease buildup. The homeowner had just finished eating when the fire was noticed, and it spread quickly to the home's siding and attic.
