Fix a Rusty Dishwasher Rack

Datetime:2014-04-15 Hits:

A rusty dishwasher rack can be a problem. Although it will not cause a dishwasher to malfunction, the rust can stain dishes and the dishwasher's interior. Often, the first reaction to a rusty rack is to replace it. A new rack, however, is an expensive special order item. Inexpensive products that allow you to repair the rack are available.

Instructions
1
Open the dishwasher and slide the rack out as far as possible. Repair it without removing it, or remove it from the dishwasher and set it on a table or counter top. Place a drop cloth or old newspapers under the rack to catch paint drips.

2
Sand any rusty spots until all rust is gone. Wipe down the rack with a damp cloth to remove any rusty dust. Let the rack dry completely.

3
Apply rust converter, also called rust neutralizer, onto the sanded spots, as there may be tiny spots of rust remaining on the rack. Rust converter stops rust from spreading and allows you to safely paint over it. An artist's paintbrush works well for this. Let the rust converter dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

4
Apply the vinyl repair paint to any part of the rack that you sanded. Also apply it to any spots that are chipped or cracked. Vinyl repair paint often comes with a brush attached to the bottle's lid. If this brush is too short or otherwise hard to work with, use the artist's brush instead. Let the vinyl repair paint dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

5
Fit replacement tips onto any dishwasher rack tines that are missing them. If they do not slide on easily, gently tap them with a small hammer.
