Five Steps to Washing Dishes

Datetime:2014-12-10 Hits:

Washing dishes isn't just about placing them in soapy water and scrubbing. Systematically following a five-step process makes it easier to get the dishes clean. Dish washing also includes drying the dishes so there are no water spots or dust after they are clean.

Removing Food
Scrape all the food particles off the dishes into a garbage disposal or garbage can. Use a spatula or piece of silverware so you remove as much of the food particles from the dishes as you can.

Prerinse
Rinse the dishes in hot water to remove any small food particles and sauces that are left on them. Rinse out drinking cups and any silverware that was used. Rinse any serving bowls and cookware.

Washing
Run hot water into the sink with some dish soap. If you have two sinks, you can run wash water in one side and use the other side for rinsing dishes. Use a dishcloth or soft scrub brush to wash dishes. Use a bottle brush to clean inside bottles or thin-styled drinking glasses. Wash the glasses first then bowls and plates, silverware and then serving dishes and cookware. Pans are always washed last.

Final Rinse
Place the washed dishes in the dish strainer in the other sink. If you have only one sink, place the dish strainer on the counter. After you have the dish strainer full of dishes, you can rinse the dishes. If the dish strainer is in the second sink, use the sink hose to rinse the dishes with hot water. If you don't have a hose, use a clean drinking glass to pour clean, hot water over the dishes to rinse. If the dish strainer is on the counter, empty the water from the wash sink, rinse out the suds and place the strainer filled with dishes in the sink and rinse.

Dry
Dry clean dishes with a lint-free cotton dish towel. As the dishes are dried, place the pieces in the cupboard to keep them clean. If you don't want to dry the dishes and you don't mind a few water spots, you can leave the dishes in the dish strainer to air-dry. When the dishes are dried, immediately place them in the cupboard so they don't get dusty or dirty again.
