Cover Storage Shelves With Fabric

Datetime:2014-06-06 Hits:

Lining storage shelves with fabric can add a personalized touch to your shelving without having to paint. Although you have to deal with measuring, cutting and spraying adhesive, you will likely complete the task of gluing fabric to shelving faster than if you had to sand and paint the shelving.

Instructions
1
Measure the top, bottom and front edge of each shelf with a tape measure. Add the measurements together, transfer the measurements to your fabric and cut the fabric to size with a pair of scissors. For example, let us say that the top and bottom of your shelf is 8 inches deep by 24 inches long and the shelf is 1 inch thick. Cut a piece of fabric that measures 17 by 24 inches.

2
Lay out the fabric on a table, right side up. Roll the fabric lengthwise so you can set the fabric on one end of the shelf and roll it out in a later step. Set aside the roll of fabric for now.

3
Scuff the surface areas of the shelf with 600-grit sandpaper. This improves the adhesion between the surface of the shelving and the glue. After sanding, wipe down the shelf with tack cloth.

4
Use painter's tape to mask off any areas where you do not want to apply adhesive.

5
Spray adhesive onto the top surface of the shelf and wait approximately 5 minutes, or until the adhesive is tacky to the touch. Adhesive used to glue headliners (the material glued to the ceiling) into cars works well for this purpose because it is formulated to work with fabrics. You can get it at most automotive part supply retailers.

6
Place the fabric roll on the end of the shelf and unroll it across the shelf lengthwise. Half the fabric will hang over the edge. This is okay; you will wrap that end around the bottom of the shelf later. Make sure you roll it out straight and without creases.

7
Spray the underside of the shelf and wait an additional 5 minutes.

8
Pull the remaining fabric (the piece that is hanging over the edge of the shelf) taut with your hands, and then firmly press it against the underside of the shelf. Make sure the fabric goes on straight and without creases.
