Clean a Mesh Sink Strainer

Datetime:2013-11-22 Hits:

A mesh sink strainer keeps particles of food or other debris from going down your sink drain and clogging it. In short time, food may build up on a mesh strainer. This looks and smells unpleasant and is not hygienic. You should clean your strainers often to avoid this build-up. To clean a mesh strainer well, you need to use the proper cleaners and a tool that can clean out all the crevices.

Instructions
1
Take out the mesh strainer and hold it over a trash bin. Knock it sharply against the interior of the bin to remove larger particles of food remaining in the mesh strainer.

2
Direct water from a garden hose or sprayer on the faucet over the strainer, or simply hold the mesh strainer upside down under the faucet to remove more food particles. If you do this over the sink, you can lay a dish towel over the drain to catch food particles coming off the strainer, if you wish.

3
Wet a tooth brush in warm water. Pour dish soap on the bristles.

4
Brush the mesh strainer from the exterior side of the mesh. Rinse it under warm water. If food still remains in the strainer, add more dish soap to the brush and brush it again, inside and outside, before rinsing.

5
Rinse the toothbrush in warm water. Sprinkle baking soda on the exterior and interior sides of the mesh strainer. Scrub it with the toothbrush again. The baking soda will freshen the strainer, plus it will help get rid of remaining stains on the strainer.

6
Rinse the strainer and replace in the sink. Give the strainer this thorough cleaning at least once a week to prevent grime build-up and odor.
