Clean Metal Furnace Filters
Metal furnace filters are washable and reusable. It's a more environmentally-friendly system. You should remove and clean the filter at least every three months, according to the American Lung Association. "2,001 Amazing Cleaning Secrets" calls this the homeowner's No. 1 maintenance job. It's not always necessary to use a cleaning solution, as you can just rinse the filter under water, but a mild solution will remove stubborn caked-in dust and debris.
Instructions
1
Carefully vacuum the metal furnace filter to remove as much muck as possible. Use the hose attachment on your vacuum cleaner. HomeTips.com recommends that you also vacuum out the filter cabinet in your furnace.
2
Rinse the filter under running water in a large sink or bathtub.
3
Spray a cleaning solution (such as Simple Green) on the filter; let this sit for a few minutes.
4
Rinse the filter again under running water. Ideally you should use a sprayer attachment on the faucet, as this provides greater pressure.
5
Let the filter dry completely before you reinstall it in your furnace.
