Clean Cast Iron BBQ Grates

Datetime:2014-07-07 Hits:

Cast iron grill grates retain heat longer, but they need proper maintenance and cleaning to prolong their longevity. Clean the grill grates once the food begins to stick to the grates and they appear to have burned-on food and grease. You can clean the barbecue grill grates with common ingredients found around your home instead of using commercial products.

Instructions

1
Allow the grill grates to heat up for 10 minutes in the grill. This will require either burning charcoal or turning on the gas.

2
Use a grill brush to scrape the cast iron grates. The grill brush will remove excess grease and burned food on the grates. Allow the grill grates to cool by extinguishing the heat source.

3
Remove the cast iron grates from the grill carefully. Place the grill grates in the kitchen sink.

4
Combine 1 cup of liquid dish soap and 1 cup of salt to make a paste. Scrub the grates with the paste using a grill brush. Let this paste sit on the grill grates for 30 minutes.

5
Rinse the paste off the cast iron grates. Dry the grates with paper towels. Coat the grates with vegetable oil using a basting brush.

6
Place the cast iron grates back on the grill. Light the grill and close the lid. Allow the grates to sit for one hour to season the grates with the vegetable oil.

7
Allow the coals to burn down or turn off the gas. Coat the grates with more vegetable oil.
