Choosing A Wine Rack

Wine racks allow wine-lovers to have a sizable wine collection in their own home. When choosing these racks, one of the first things to consider is whether to store your wine vertically or horizontally.
Vertically, you see the labels. Horizontally, you keep the cork moist. It comes down to how fast you will be consuming the wine. If it will be stored for more than a few weeks, store it horizontally.
Other factors to consider are the style and the material the rack will be made of. There are so many styles to choose from that you can certainly find something you'll be happy with. The issue here is the look of the rack and how it "fits" into the decore of the room.
The most frequently used is the wooden rack. These come in a variety of finishes and are often made of maple, mahogany, pine, redwood, or cherry.
Less common racks can be made of metal, plastic, or concrete.
Size varies from counter-top racks holding 3 to 12 bottles, to ceiling-high racks holding 150 to 200 bottles. By assembling a few of these, a wine enthusiast can create a wine cellar that stores over 1000 bottles. Personally, I think drinking that much wine would be difficult (but not impossible).
If your collection is intended to be more than 150 bottles, you should consider having temperature and humidity controls. Since you will be storing your wine for a long time, you'll want to preserve it properly.
One of the best things about wooden racks is that they can be customized. You can make them fit any wall, and create a wall that will look good in your home. Practically any space (closets, space below stairs, etc.) can be converted into a wine cellar.
