Having a spice rack in your kitchen is a great way to keep all of your spices organized and able to reach in a pinch. With all of the spices one may have, it can create quite a mess if they are not arranged neatly and are instead put in separate areas. Before you run out and buy your next spice rack, here are some things you should consider.

Decide if you want an empty spice rack or one that comes with filled containers. Despite what you mainly see in the stores, you can find a spice rack that does not already come with containers. If you are giving one as a gift or you are buying your first one, then buying the spice rack with the filled containers is your best option. If you already have containers that you want to use, then you may want to purchase an empty spice rack. Make sure your containers are the correct size for the shelves before you make the purchase.

Pick the material that you want your spice rack to be made out of. Make sure that it accents the colors and materials in the rest of your kitchen. Spice racks usually come in metal, wood or acrylic so you can find one to match no matter the style of your kitchen.

Consider the amount of containers that you will need. You can find a spice rack that contains only a few containers and then there are those that can hold upwards of 40. If you use spices a lot in your cooking or you just like having a lot of variety, then you may prefer to have more than less. If you are giving a spice rack as a gift, you’re better off giving one that has a large amount of containers.

Decide how much space you have to use. There are so many types of spice racks to choose from that you can easily find one that works for you. There are drawer, counter, magnetic, cabinet and hanging spice racks. The counter spice racks are good for those that have enough counter space to spare. They can revolve or stand still and they can be as big as you want them to be. Drawer spice racks are great for those that don’t have much counter space and don’t have a lot of stuff taking up space in the drawers. Magnetic spice racks are good for those that don’t have a lot of space, but want to keep their spices on the counter. They are usually stackable or are able to be attached to a magnetic piece that stands upright. Cabinet spice racks are for those that have enough room on the inside of the cabinet doors and want to keep the spices out of sight. Hanging spice racks are another good option for those that are lacking in space. Hanging spice racks can be hung up on the wall and out of the way.
