Build a Dish Rack

Datetime:2014-12-04 Hits:

Dish racks that hang on a wall save cabinet and countertop space. Build your dish rack with wood that complements existing décor to round out the kitchen's look. Solid hardwood such as oak or beech work well for this project, but keep in mind that weight is a factor when installing the dish rack on the wall. Depending on the width and height of your dish rack, this project can be completed in about a day.

Instructions
1
Place the four pieces of 3/4-by-3/4-by-18-inch lumber on the worktable. Measure from one end and make marks 1 inch apart. Make marks on those marks 3/8-inch from the long sides. Turn two of the pieces a quarter turn and mark that side in the same manner. These are the rails of the dish rack.

2
Drill 3/8-inch holes 1/4-inch deep on the intersecting marks with a drill press. Insert the 6 1/2-inch dowels into one of the rails with two sets of holes and one with one set of holes. Place two bar clamps on the pieces to hold them together. Repeat this with the remaining rails and dowels.

3
Secure the 3/4-by-3/4-by-7 1/2-inch lumber to the ends of the rails with the finish nails. Remove the clamps. These are the shelves of the dish rack.

4
Put the 1-by-8-by-18-inch lumber on the worktable. Measure from one end and make a mark at 12 inches. Label the end you measured from as the bottom. Place the framing square on the mark and draw a line across the wood. Drill three 1/16-inch pilot holes 3/8-inch from the bottom and 3/8-inch under the line. Drill one hole 1 inch from the long sides and one midway between the two. These are the sides of the dish rack.

5
Stand the shelves on one of the long sides so the remaining dowel holes face each other. Insert the 11-inch dowels in the holes. These dowels represent the back of the rack.

6
Apply glue to the 7 1/2-inch sides of the dowel shelves and secure them to the dish rack sides with the finish nails through the pilot holes. Hold the 1-by-2-by-18-inch lumber between the sides at the top so the wide side is even with the back of the dish rack sides. Secure it with the finish nails.
