The local farm bureau is looking to draw in the money next week to help students pursue agriculture-related educations.

Since 2001, Imperial County Farm Bureau has distributed more than $75,000 in scholarships to local students through its scholarship funds. The program has grown over the years, with last year’s scholarships totaling more than $15,000 drawn from three different scholarship funds and distributed to 20 local students.

The longest-standing of these funds, the Imperial County Farm Bureau Scholarship, is supported each year by the annual Farm Bureau scholarship barbecue, with net proceeds from the April event distributed to local students each summer.

This year’s fundraising barbecue is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. April 20 at Ryerson Hall in El Centro. Tickets are $8 per person and are available at the Farm Bureau office at 1000 Broadway in El Centro, or by calling 760-352-3831. The event will feature old-fashioned ice cream, live music, prize drawings and activities for kids. Drive-through and take-out orders will also be available. Net proceeds from this year’s event will be disbursed as scholarships this summer. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door on the day of the event.
